The Oaks CE learning federation represents a family of three small Church Infant Schools based Hampshire who all work closely together under the leadership of the federation Headteacher and Governing Body. One of the federation’s improvement plan objectives is for it to become an evidence-informed federation where the schools collaborate to rigorously evaluate the quality of the education they offer, understand what they need to do to improve, to take appropriate evidence-informed action and evaluate the impact of their actions, enabling them to achieve together. To meet this objective, the executive headteacher of the federation devised a model of professional learning where (as of 2016) four of the statutory staff professional development (inset) days allocated to schools in England were dedicated solely to evidence-informed professional development. Using a cycle of enquiry approach, the aim of the model is to enable teachers to engage collaboratively with research, to identify new practices, to trial these practices, to measure their impact and then roll out the most successful within and across schools in the federation. This report provides an evaluation of the approach in relation to three key areas: 1) did the model help teachers become engaged with research; 2) did the model help teachers use the research to develop approaches to feedback with clear pathways to impact; and 3) have these new approaches had impact?

Happy Empathy Day

Empathy Day on 13 June 2017 is a platform to emphasise the importance of empathy in our divided world, and raise awareness of the power of stories to develop it.

A new Read for Empathy guide for adults living and working with children aged 4-11 will be published on 13 June. It features 21 “must-reads” endorsed by The Sunday Times’ children’s book reviewer Nicolette Jones and is available free from www.empathylab.uk.

The Day is being launched by EmpathyLab, a new organisation with a mission to use stories to help us understand each other better, led by Miranda McKearney OBE, founder of The Reading Agency.

Miranda McKearney OBE, Founder: “We’re establishing an Empathy Day to shine a bright light on the importance of empathy in our divided world – new approaches to building this core life skill are badly needed .

Helping children learn about empathy through books lays strong foundations for resisting prejudice and intolerance. Neuroscience research shows that the emotions we feel for characters wires our brains to have the same sort of sensitivity towards real people. Our Read for Empathy guide for 4-11 year olds has great new book ideas, and we’re delighted to enjoy the support of high profile authors and illustrators including Neil Gaiman, Chris Riddell, Jacqueline Wilson and Cressida Cowell.

About empathy

Our understanding of the complex mechanisms underpinning empathy is changing all the time, and psychologists, neuroscientists, sociologists and philosophers have different interpretations. Most agree on three elements: emotional/affective empathy where we literally resonate with someone else’s feelings; cognitive empathy or perspective-taking where we apply reason to working out how someone else feels and empathic concern, which is a powerful motivator for helping others, a force for social change.

Work to support it is relevant to all children, but especially those who are vulnerable. I’m looking forward to seeing the reaction to the Day.”

The children at Netley Marsh have been busy visiting the library at Totton to find books which help them understand empathy.  Today they will be voting for the best at our Empathy Awards celebration!

Mrs Daniel’s Blog!

Hello all and welcome to my new blog. We have realised across our three schools that parents appreciate our class blogs as it helps them to see what their child is learning and celebrate what is going on in the classrooms, so I am starting one myself. I always tell staff that I don’t expect them to do anything I wouldn’t do myself so here it is and my first blog is about kindness.

I am sure you will all agree that how to be kind is one of the most powerful things we can teach our children so this year we will be celebrating National Random Acts of Kindness Day on 17th February. In preparation please start talking to your children about what kindness means to you. Please post to me your own or your favourite quotes from others. Here is one of mine:
